We’re still in the midst of summer here in the southern hemisphere, but the occasional cooler morning lately has got me thinking about sewing some transitional season pieces to carry me into the autumn!
First up, the Blackwood Cardigan, by Helen’s Closet! I bought this pattern WAY back during the pattern launch sale …. And then that was it. It just sat sadly in my stash while I lived in a tropical country and sewed all the summer things, haha!
Then a few weeks ago I picked up this light yet cozy rayon/poly knit and knew instantly it was destined to become my long overdue Blackwood! I was all set to sew up the longer View A, until I saw Helen’s tutorial on how to sew an even longer split hem version, and from that moment on I couldn’t get the idea out of my head!
I was a little uncertain about how this fabric was going to behave. It has a slightly slinky quality about it, and I was afraid it was going to slither around all over the place. Fortunately, it actually behaved quite well!
As a precaution I made sure to cut it flat rather than on the fold, which of course also had the added bonus of giving me a much better yield from my 2m cut, and I think I have enough left over to make some sort of top if I’m careful.
I lengthened mine to about knee length. I think I ended up adding the same amount to my pattern pieces that Helen uses in her tutorial, which I’m pretty sure was 12 inches.
Overall, it was SO easy to make! My machine even played nice with the fabric and didn’t chew it up. I don’t have an overlocker, so I constructed it entirely on my regular machine. I used the lightning stitch for pretty much everything, except for using an overcast stitch to finish most of the raw seam allowances.
I’m really pleased with the overall result, and I think it’s going to be a really nice light layer to throw on as the weather starts to cool down!
And since the vast majority of my cardigans are approximately a million years old and hail from Target back when we lived in New York, I think my cardigan drawer is definitely due for an update. Time to sew all the Blackwoods!
